The Right To Retain Representation

Don’t get it twisted! Taxpayers, you have a right to retain a representative to assist you in your IRS matters.

The taxpayer bill of rights states “[t]axpayers have the right to retain an authorized representative of their choice to represent them in their dealings with the IRS. Taxpayers have the right to seek assistance from a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic if they cannot afford representation.”

If you hire a representative like America’s Tax Attorney, you do not have to attend a hearing or interview with the IRS, “unless the IRS formally summons you to appear.”

Additionally, “in most situations, the IRS must suspend an interview if you request to consult with a representative” like a tax attorney.

Your rights as a taxpayer can be found in IRS Publication 1 (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1.pdf).
